Research Students & Partial Students

Students will be admitted as research students for specific topics in a graduate school at the university, provided there are no hindrances to education and research in the prospective field.
Students can be admitted as partial students upon admittance if they want to take multiple classes or a course at a graduate school, provided there are no hindrance to taking the requested classes.
They can earn credits by taking classes and obtaining sufficient results in exams.

Regulations

*The current “Faculty of Education and Human Sciences” will change its name to the “Faculty of Education” in 2016.
*The current “Department of Education Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medicine and Engineering” will change its name to the “Integrated Graduate School of Medicine, Engineering, and Agricultural Sciences” and will be restructured.
For now, the university website still uses the current nomenclature for these entities.

Research Students

  • Individuals who have graduated from a university
  • Other individuals that are acknowledged by the faculty to have attained the same academic level as those who have graduated from a university

Partial Students

  • Individuals who have graduated from high school or a secondary school
  • Other individuals who are acknowledged by the faculty to have attained the same academic level as those who have graduated from high school or a secondary school

Graduate School of Education, Integrated Graduate School of Medicine, Engineering, and Agricultural Sciences

Research Students & Partial Students

To be admitted into a Master’s course, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Graduation from a university (hereinafter, “University”) as set forth in the School Education Act (Law No. 26 of 1947) Article 83
  • Attained a Bachelor’s degree per the School Education Act Article 104 Paragraph 4
  • Completed 16 years of schooling outside of Japan
  • Completed 16 years of coursework in Japan through distance learning provided by a school outside of Japan
  • Completed coursework otherwise specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in educational facilities in Japan as part of an international school system having courses from a university outside of Japan (said individuals must have completed 16 years of coursework from said foreign school)
  • Be particularly approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  • Completed specialized coursework (only that coursework meeting other criteria set forth by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as being four or more years in length) from vocational schools otherwise specified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology after the date set forth by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  • Attended a university for three or more years or have completed 15 years of education in a school outside of Japan, and are acknowledged to have taken a certain number of credits with excellent grades in another graduate school
  • Be twenty-two (22) years or more in age, and acknowledged through admissions qualification screening for graduate school to have attained the same academic level of a university graduate

To be admitted into a 3-year Doctor’s course in the Integrated Graduate School of Medicine, Engineering, and Agricultural Sciences, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Obtained a Master’s degree or other degree established by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology by completing coursework in a professional graduate school as set forth in the School Education Act Article 104 Paragraph 1 (hereinafter, “Professional Degree”)
  • Acquired a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional Degree in a foreign country
  • Taken classes in Japan through a distance learning program provided by a school in a foreign country and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional Degree
  • Completed coursework otherwise approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in educational facilities in Japan as part of an international school system having courses from a university outside of Japan and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree or Professional Degree
  • Completed coursework of the United Nations University (hereinafter, “United Nations University”) established December 11, 1972 by decision of the United Nations and as set forth by the Special Measures Act (Law No. 72 of 1976) Article 1, Paragraph 2 in conjunction with a partnership between the United Nations and Japan regarding the United Nations University Headquarters, and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a Master’s degree
  • Studied curricula provided by education facilities with a type 4 international school designation or provided by the United Nations University and passed tests or screenings equivalent to those stipulated in the Graduate School Charter Criteria Article 16-2, and are acknowledged to have attained the same academic level, or greater, as a Master’s degree
  • Be particularly approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  • Be twenty-four (24) years or more in age and acknowledge through admissions qualification screening for graduate school to have attained the same academic level, or greater, as a Master’s degree or Professional Degree

Procedures

Research student and partial student applicants planning to enter the university in April 2016 should confirm that they can fulfill all criteria of the admissions guidelines prior to starting the application process.
