ReVegeAte, a group of students in the Atsushi Tanaka seminar in the Department of Community and Social Systems in the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, recently took on the challenge of solving the problem of food loss.
In addition to raising funds through a crowd-funding campaign to raise funds for their activities, the students worked with Furman Inoue Farm (representative: Yoshitaka Inoue), located in Hokuto City, which offers farming experiences and organizes agricultural events, and OASIS (representative: Masashi Koike), a restaurant in Kofu City, to come up with a plan for solving the problem.
On Sunday, September 20, 2020, an event was held at the farm in Hokuto City’s Takane Town, where the participants experienced harvesting and cooked dishes using the harvested vegetables, with the aim of changing consumer awareness of the issue.
Families and crowdfunding supporters living in the prefecture participated in the event, where they harvested seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, eggplants and green peppers after receiving a lecture from Mr. Inoue. Afterwards, participants cooked their own tomatoes and eggplants in oil, grilled eggplants and green pepper pancakes based on the recipes provided by Mr. Koike, the owner and chef of OASIS, and tasted freshly picked vegetables. In addition, students cooked vegetable curry and pickles in a kitchen car loaned by Nakamura Corporation (representative: Mr. Fumiaki Nakamura), a restaurant equipment wholesaler in Tsuru City, and served them to the participants.
Participants said they enjoyed the harvest experience, which is not something they would normally have the chance to do, and some of the students who organized the event said they realized how difficult it is to publicize their activities, gain more supporters, and raise funds, and that they wanted to make the most of their experience for their future activities.
