Five graduate students in Department of Engineering received the Excellent Presentation Award at WET2026 international conference

 Mr. Soichiro Hirai, Ms. Annisa Andarini Ruti, and Ms. Jessamine Gail M. Inson, doctoral course students of Environmental and Social System Science Course in Department of Engineering, Ms. Nurfatin Yuerae and Ms. Khodijah Karimah, master’s students of Special Educational Program on River Basin Environmental Science in Department of Engineering (supervisor: Prof. Eiji Haramoto, Interdisciplinary Center for River Basin Environment), received the WET Excellent Presentation Award at the Water and Environment Technology Conference 2026 (WET2026) which had been held at Doshisha University on July 11-12, 2026. The award is given to outstanding presentations that are worthy of research encouragement, and this year, 24 winners received the award out of 197 presenters.

 The details of the five awardees are as follows:

Mr. Soichiro Hirai (3rd-year doctoral student of River Basin Environmental Science Major, Environmental and Social System Science Course, Department of Engineering)
Title: Multi-matrix surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their resistance genes in a pig farm
Comment: I would like to expand our research to make this technology applicable not only to pig farms but also to other farms and to pathogens.

Ms. Annisa Andarini Ruti (2nd-year doctoral student of River Basin Environmental Science Major, Environmental and Social System Science Course, Department of Engineering)
Title: Assessment of antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater and river water in Cikapundung Watershed, Indonesia, using high-throughput quantitative PCR
Comment: Sharing my research and connecting with researchers from diverse backgrounds has been an inspiring experience. I hope to continue advancing impactful research that contributes to the scientific community and public health.

Ms. Jessamine Gail M. Inson (2nd-year doctoral student of River Basin Environmental Science Major, Environmental and Social System Science Course, Department of Engineering)
Title: Wastewater-based monitoring of mosquito-borne viruses in the Philippines
Comment: Honored by this award, I aim to expand my research to develop an integrated, adaptable methodological framework for wastewater-based surveillance of emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens in the Philippines, contributing to the implementation of reliable environmental monitoring systems that can detect and prevent potential outbreaks.

Ms. Nurfatin Yuerae (2nd-year master’s student, Special Educational Program on River Basin Environmental Science, Department of Engineering)
Title: Distinct detection patterns of F-specific RNA coliphage genogroups across full wastewater treatment process using 4-plex digital PCR
Comment: I hope my research can bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and real-world applications, making environmental virus monitoring easier to understand while providing reliable scientific evidence for public health decision-making.

Ms. Khodijah Karimah (1st-year master’s student, Special Educational Program on River Basin Environmental Science, Department of Engineering)
Title: Comparison of magnetic bead- and column-based extraction methods for antibiotic resistance genes in wastewater
Comment: This conference has encouraged me to deepen my knowledge and research on antimicrobial resistance, expand my perspective, and contribute to environmental protection and public health.
