One master’s student and four undergraduate students received presentation awards at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society on Water Environment.
At the 60th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society on Water Environment held at Chuo University Tama Campus on March 9-11, 2026, Ms. Yuka Sakamaki, a first-year master’s student in the Special Educational Program on River Basin Environmental Science, Department of Engineering, received the JSWE-KURITA Best Presentation Award, and Mr. Yuki Ogura, a fourth-year undergraduate student in Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, Ms. Mai Sato and Mr. Ryoei Miyagawa, fourth-year undergraduate students in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, and Mr. Takaaki Saika, a third-year undergraduate student in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering received the JSWE-LION Best Student Poster Presentation Award.
JSWE-KURITA Best Presentation Award recognizes research presentations by master’s students to encourage research motivation. At this time, 18 awardees were selected from 165 candidates. The JSWE-LION Best Student Poster Presentation Award is given to undergraduate, technical college, and junior college students for their excellent poster presentations to promote research motivation. At this time, 16 out of 126 students received this award.
The details of the five awardees are as follows:
Ms. Yuka Sakamaki (1st-year master’s student, Special Educational Program on River Basin Environmental Science, Department of Engineering)
- Supervisor: Prof. Eiji Haramoto (Interdisciplinary Center for River Basin Environment (ICRE))
- Title: Analysis of the Dynamics of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewater Treatment Processes by Digital PCR
- Comment: I am delighted to have received this wonderful award. I will never forget to be grateful to everyone who has supported me, and I will continue to do my best.
Ms. Mai Sato (4th-year undergraduate student, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering)
- Supervisor: Prof. Eiji Haramoto (ICRE)
- Title: Investigation of the Presence of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia coli and Its Resistance Genes in Wastewater and River
- Comment: I look forward to the continued advancement of research on antimicrobial resistance.
Mr. Ryoei Miyagawa (4th-year undergraduate student, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering)
- Supervisors: Prof. Eiji Haramoto (ICRE) and Dr. Ichiro Yoneda (Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering)
- Title: Effect of Rainfall on Contamination with Pathogenic Bacteria at a Recreational Water Site in the Fuefuki River
- Comment: I hope this research will help further advance this field.
Mr. Yuki Ogura (4th-year undergraduate student, Department of Environmental Science, Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences)
- Supervisor: Dr. Tatsuru Kamei (Assistant Professor, ICRE)
- Title: Fundamental Nutritional Characteristics of Hydrogenotrophic Denitrification Sludge for Aquaculture Feeds
- Comment: I would like to apply what I learned from this presentation to my future research activities.
Mr. Takaaki Saika (3rd-year undergraduate student, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering)
- Supervisor: Prof. Eiji Haramoto (ICRE)
- Title: Development of a Culture-Based Method for the Rapid Detection of Escherichia coli in River Water
- Comment: I will incorporate the advice and suggestions provided as I move forward with my research.
