Six students in the Master’s Program in Engineering, Integrated Graduate School of Medicine, Engineering, and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Yamanashi:

  • Takuya Oishi (Computer Science and Engineering Course)
  • Kazunori Terada (Computer Science and Engineering Course)
  • Haruki Endo (Mechatronics Engineering Course)
  • Ryosuke Shimazu (Mechatronics Engineering Course)
  • Naoki Nishio (Mechatronics Engineering Course)
  • Ren Fujimoto (Mechatronics Engineering Course)

have completed the dual-degree program between the University of Yamanashi and Pukyong National University (PKNU) in Korea and have earned master’s degrees in engineering from both universities.

These six students represent the third cohort of the program, bringing the total number of dual-degree recipients between the University of Yamanashi and PKNU to 10. This achievement embodies the University’s slogan, “A Regional Core, Developing Global Talent,” and strongly reflects the University of Yamanashi’s commitment to fostering students who are rooted in the region while broadening their perspectives to the world.

At the University of Yamanashi, under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)-supported Inter-University Exchange Project, “A³I (Asia Actual Problem-Solving Driven AI Education Program),” our university has been working with overseas partner institutions, including PKNU, to cultivate human resources equipped with international perspectives and advanced AI and engineering application skills. The dual degree program is an educational framework through which a portion of the credits earned at a partner university is recognized by the student’s home university, enabling students to earn degrees from both institutions by fulfilling the graduation requirements of each. This type of learning opportunity is valuable not only for acquiring specialized knowledge but also for developing the ability to collaborate across national and cultural boundaries.

Through their research activities abroad and daily life in a different country, the six students who earned the dual degree deepened their understanding of other cultures, enhanced their English communication skills, and developed the ability to view their own research from a broader perspective. Their experience of addressing challenges in different educational and research environments has fostered an attitude of independent thinking and continuous challenge, greatly supporting their growth as researchers and engineers.

PKNU, with its educational and research environment in fields including AI and intelligent robotics engineering, has become an important place of learning for University of Yamanashi students to deepen their expertise while gaining international research experience.

The University of Yamanashi will continue to strengthen its collaboration with PKNU and further promote initiatives to nurture “globally capable talent rooted in the region” through expanded research exchange and enhanced international learning opportunities.
