Keita Nakashima, first-year master course student of Computer Science and Engineering, supervised by Associate Prof. Ando Hidetoshi received the Poster Award at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Society for Actinomycetes, Japan, held from Sep. 11 to 12 at Musashino University, Ariake campus, Tokyo, Japan. The title of the presentation was “Automatic discrimination of actinomycete colonies using artificial intelligence”.

Actinomycetes are known microorganisms to produce antibiotics including avermectin. In general, the work of isolation of actinomycetes executes on a plate which has actinomycete colonies but also contains bacteria and fungi. In this study, we developed the automatic system for selection of actinomycete colonies from another bacterial and fungal colonies using the latest AI (artificial intelligence) technology.
