Summary

In order to realize "the construction of a safe and sustainable social foundation in harmony with environment," we need new knowledge and technology appropriate to the current world. The base elements of social foundation are human, nature environment and artificialities. Our research and education are about the development and application on "Physical, biological and chemical technology, and management technology" which maintains the harmony among artificialities, human activities and nature environment. The division aims to cultivate a talented individual who will contribute to the social foundation that fulfills future demands. Our division consists of three chairs. The education and research by these chairs are as follows. "The structural engineering chair" systematically creates the advanced technology for the design and construction of civil engineering structure built by putting great importance on the relationship between nature, humans and society. Also it tries to construct the maintenance management system, including the natural disaster prevention system of the structure. "The infrastructure engineering chair" analyzes and integrates engineering problems on city and region, traffic, landscape, river environment, global environment. The chair also aims to produce the technique for the plan, design and management to create the infrastructure where amenity, safety and economical efficiency are synthetically considered. "The environmental engineering chair" are following: the grasp of the dynamic phase of pollutants in the environment, elucidation of the pollution mechanism, the hazard assessment, water and sewage, chemical and biological water handling, appropriate management of waste, maintenance of ecosystem, and utilization of the resource renewal function of ecosystem.
