Developing Talented Leaders for Society

Taking as our catchphrase ‘global professionals at the heart of communities,’ we at the University of Yamanashi aim to develop talented personnel equipped to respond to local demands as core members of their communities, as well as to operate on a global stage. This mission has produced many exceptional graduates who now play key roles in a range of areas out in society.

Shuichiro Maeda

Our three faculties?the Faculty of Education and Human Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Engineering?draw on leading-edge research results in educating undergraduate and graduate students. Our teachers work together with passion and commitment to foster professionals with broad perspectives and outstanding ethics and expertise.

The Faculty of Education and Human Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering are both on the Kofu Campus, which is separate from the Faculty of Medicine campus. However, all first-year students study at the Kofu Campus, taking compulsory education subjects designed to provide a good educational foundation and form character. Through participation in these classes, we hope that students will actively deepen their interaction with both students from the same faculty and also students from other faculties who have different goals and ways of thinking, making many friends and acquaintances with whom they can speak freely and openly.

The Faculty of Education and Human Sciences, which comprises the Division of School Education, the Division of Lifelong Learning, the Division of Social and Cultural Studies, and the Division of Interdisciplinary Sciences, operates ‘from the perspective of teacher development and human science,’ nurturing top-class experts able to contribute to the creation of rich lives.

The Faculty of Medicine, containing the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing, aspires to ‘educate medical professionals to underpin the health of humanity.’ The aim is to develop professionals who can experience the suffering of the sick as their own suffering, who continue to work to acquire medical knowledge and techniques throughout their lives, and who are able to contribute to health and medical care and welfare, as well as to train medical researchers who can operate internationally.

The Faculty of Engineering embraces seven departments: the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and Media Engineering, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Biotechnology, and the Department of Ecosocial System Engineering. In addition, the university is home to five engineering-related centers: the Clean Energy Research Center, the Institute of Enology and Viticulture, the Center for Crystal Science and Technology, the International Research Center for River Basin Environment, and the Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center. With the ambition of ‘technology education which considers future generations,’ we work to produce engineers and engineering researchers with a broad education, deep specialist knowledge, and a full appreciation of the impact of engineering technologies on society and nature, as well as the social responsibility that engineers must bear.

At the graduate level we have the Graduate School of Education and the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medical and Engineering. Here, advanced interdisciplinary education and research is conducted in various areas to contribute to the advance of society and in response to the wishes of graduates seeking to further deepen their specialist knowledge and practical skills.

In sum, the University of Yamanashi strives to develop talented professional who can operate at the heart of society. To achieve this goal, we undertake our own checks and evaluations and also seek a range of feedback from out in society, constantly pushing forward with reform. Study at the University of Yamanashi, and open your way out into the world.
