Department of Human Science and Fundamentals of Nursing

1.General description of the department and the course

In the area of Fundamentals of Nursing, one of our goals is to teach nursing science from a historical view point such as, what is nursing, nursing theories which provide the rationale behind actual nursing care activities, how nursing science has developed, and what kind of challenges it has today. We also teach nursing care activities and roles as a nurse to achieve nursing goals such as the promotion of health, prevention of disease, alleviation of pain, and recovery to health, as well as approaches to solve a person’s health problems, and basic knowledge, techniques, and attitude which form the foundation for nursing practice. Students learn these through coursework and on-site training.
Our department has strength in the area of research in which each faculty member is specializing.
For Human Science, research from the perspective of microbiology such as prevention of hospital infection, human genetics such as prenatal diagnosis and study on the support of the development of children with special needs is the main focus.
For Fundamentals of Nursing, we deal with a wide range of research including historical study of nursing, disability acceptance and rehabilitation nursing, research on nursing techniques with physiological and ergonomic methods in order to illustrate the scientific basis for nursing aid, and study on the theory and methods of teaching nursing.
Research themes for the past senior students have included communication with patients, assistance techniques for ambulation, and stresses due to alimentary therapy. Nine students have completed our graduate program studying our traditional theme of alternative medicine or rehabilitation nursing. Both our under-graduate and graduate students are working on their surveillance or experimental study with the theme in which they have questions. The faculty encourages and supports them to find something new. Our educational policy is to respect each student’s characteristic and help them to unleash their full potential. We also aim for education in which we can encourage students’ creativity and desire to challenge themselves, and progress with them.
