General Description of the Department
We conduct clinical research mainly on retinochoroidal diseases and glaucoma as well as basic research on the protection of optic nerves using model animals or isolated retinal cells. At the university hospital, we play a leading role of clinical practice in the field of ophthalmology in Yamanashi Prefecture.
Chairman: Professor Shigeo Tsukahara 1982-1998.
Professor Hiroyuki Iijima 1999-present.
Members of the Faculty
Professor: Hiroyuki Iijima (Retinochoroidal diseases, perimetry, diagnostic imaging of retina, ophthalmologic inheritance)
Associate Professor: Masahito Imai (Vitreous surgery, diabetic retinopathy)
Associate Professor: Kenji Kashiwagi (Clinical glaucoma, cellular biology)
Assistant Professor: Mitsuhiro Imasawa (Retinochoroidal diseases, perimetry)
General Description of the Research Activities
Macular diseases: We conduct clinical research on various macular diseases using optical coherence tomography and automated static perimetry.
Perimetry of retinal diseases: We have established a new method to evaluate the progression of retinitis pigmentosa using static automated perimeter.
Glaucoma: We have developed a new screening devise for angle-closure glaucoma and applied it to clinical practice and clinical reserach.
Experimental studies on optic nerve and glaucoma: We conduct researches on the mechanism of optical nerve pathology and its protection through in vivo and in vitro experiments using cultured retinal ganglion cells.
General Description of the Medical Practice
We have special clinics for retinal diseases, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy,
corneal diseases, strabismus, and disorders of the lacrimal passage in
addition to our general outpatient clinic. We have inpatient facility with
34 beds to treat patients both medically and surgically. We conduct about
1,000 surgeries in a year for patients with vitreoretinal diseases, glaucoma,
cataract, corneal diseases, strabismus, and ocular trauma. We are the only
hospital in the prefecture equipped with an excimer laser device and photodynamic
laser to offer phototherapeutic keratectomy and photodynamic therapy for
patients with corneal disease or age-related macular degeneration.
