1.General Description
The department was founded by the first professor Akira Ueno (Honorary
Professor, University of Yamanashi, former Vice-President of Yamanashi
Medical University) in 1983. The second professor Masayuki Takada
joined in 1999, and we had the 20th anniversary of the department
last year. Currently the department specializes in the area of urogenital
oncology, urinary disturbance, erectile dysfunction, renal failure,
and endoscopic surgery.
2.Plinciples
There are the stated plinciples in our department;
Basic principles is "Work hard, and play".
Principles for medical activity is "Minimally invasive and good
treatment".
Research principles are "Original, simple and understandable".
3.The Members of The Department
The department consists of a total of 45 members, a professor, an associate professor, 2 assistant professors, 6 research associates, 2 medical officials, 3 residents, 8 postgraduates, and 22 doctors under external assignment at affiliated hospitals. 4.Clinical Activities
The department is in charge of an inpatient unit with 33 beds,
an outpatient unit for urology, and the division of hemodialysis
therapy.
- Treatment of urinary disturbance
Professor Takeda and Assistant Professor Araki are leading clinical
activities in this area. We offer a special clinic for urinary
problems on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and conduct urodynamics tests
at PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We focus on patients of urinary
disturbance, who are rather difficult for general urologists to
treat. We provide a variety of treatments including an advanced
therapy for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse,
artificial sphincter implantation applied to the highly advanced
medicine, intravesical infusion therapy of the vanilloid receptor
agonist for patients with detrusor overactivity, and hydrodistention
therapy against interstitial cystitis.
- Minimally invasive surgery
Professor Takeda successfully performed the world’s first laparoscopic
adrenalectomy in 1992. Since then, he has performed various laparoscopic
surgeries on urological malignant tumors such as renal tumor and
many pediatric laparoscopic surgeries. His expertise encompasses
a wide range of laparoscopic surgery including laparoscopic nephrectomy
for the renal transplantation donors.
He deals with over 200 cases of adrenalectomy and over 100 cases
of nephrectomy. He is one of the leading urologic laparoscopic
surgeons in Japan.
- Treatment of renal failure
We systematically conduct hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and
renal transplantation. We also offer new treatments such as various
interventional radiology treatments against obstruction and stenosis
of hemodialysis arteriovenous fistulas, endoscope-assisted surgery
to fix the malposition of peritoneal dialysis catheters, and laparoscopic
nephrectomy for renal transplantation donors.
- Malignant tumor
The main treatment activities in this area include radical prostatectomy
and radiation therapy against prostate cancer, multidrug chemical
therapy against urothelial cancer, minimally invasive therapy
against renal cell carcinoma and renal pelvic cancer, multidisciplinary
treatment including multidrug chemical therapy against testicular
tumors.
- Prostate-gland enlargement
We conduct various minimally invasive therapies and systematic
prostate biopsies for prostate-gland enlargement.
- Male infertility and erectile dysfunction
We conduct microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA), testicular
sperm extraction (TESE) for intracytoplasmic sperm injectionton
(ICSI) against ologozoospermia and azoospermia, and microsurgery
against obstructive azoospermia. Treatment for erectile dysfunction
and male climacterium is also conducted.
5.Research Themes
- Urinary disturbance: We currently focus on the physiological,
pharmacological, biochemical, and molecular biological research
regarding afferent signaling in the urinary tract. We also conduct
epidemiological investigations on various levels.
- Physiological, pharmacological, and molecular biological research
on sexual dysfunction: We research on prostaglandin receptors,
nitric oxide synthase, and arginase.
- Research on the factors involving in metastasis, infiltration,
and growth of genitourinary cancer: We especially investigate
the factors which possibly initiate bone metastasis using the
quantitative gene expression analyzing method.
- Nephrology: We conduct research on the introduction of a sensor
gene for the earlier diagnosis of rejection of a renal transplant.
