Department of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Ethics

1.General description of the department and the course:

The department of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Ethics was founded by Professor Tetsuhiko Kariya (currently emeritus professor). Mainly, biochemical studies in relation to pathgenesis of bipolar disorder and its treatment have been conducted to date. Since Shigenobu Kanba took up the position as the second professor in 1995, our area of research has further expanded. We also willingly present case report to the academies.
For clinical work, affective disorders are very common among both outpatients and inpatients. In the outpatient-unit, we adopt the archiater-system, and new patients are examined by highly experienced senior doctors at their first visit. In addition to pharmacotherapy, psychotherapies including cognitive therapy as well as group therapy are integrated into everyday treatment. The Department of Neuropsychiatry at the university hospital has an open ward with 40 beds, maintaining a relatively relaxed therapeutic environment. There is a roof terrace adjacent to the ward. It is utilized effectively for growing plants, doing the daily radio gymnastic exercises when the weather is nice and general recreation for inpatients. Weekly activities in the ward include patient meeting, tea parties, light exercise in the gymnasium, video watching, and walking. Annual events such as the Doll Festival, cherry blossom viewing party, Bon Festival in summer, and Christmas party at the end of the year are also held.
